Unique Heritage Collection ‘Library of Cardinal d’Alsace’ Fully Catalogued

Recently, the bibliographic details of the last volume from the rich collection of Thomas Philippe d’Alsace (1679-1759), archbishop of Mechelen (Malines) were entered into the electronic catalogue of the University Library. This means that the ‘Leuven’ part of this extraordinary book collection, preserved in the Maurits Sabbe Library, can be consulted more easily to its full extent.

The history of the so-called ‘Library of Cardinal d’Alsace’ dates back to the early 18th century. When he was appointed archbishop, Thomas Philippe d’Alsace decided to house his private book collection in his palace in Mechelen and to make it disponible for the seminarists. The library of D’Alsace, a remarkable reference collection, contained both earlier and contemporary works from different domains divided into various sections: Bibles and Exegetical works, publications on Patristics, Theology and Canon Law as well as Civil Law, History, Philology, Philosophy and Exact Sciences were avidly collected. A Catalogus haereticorum with “heretical” texts concluded the collection. In 1738 Alsace donated his library to the St Rombouts Chapter and so the library attained, quite exceptionally for its time, a semi-public character.

The bibliophile Cardinal also took care of his books: most were bound in calf leather with a typical decoration in gold stamping. Many bindings bear the coat of arms of the golden stamp of d’Alsace on the boards. The collection with its walls of glittering golden backs is a real eye catcher in the Archive of Precious and Rare Books of the Maurits Sabbe Library.

The French Revolution dispersed the exceptional collection, which originally numbered nearly 9,400 titles. 22 cases were disposed of by the French revolutionary regime and ended up in libraries in Paris but also in the Royal Library in Brussels and a few other libraries. About five hundred volumes, especially legal titles, ended up in the library of the Town of Mechelen and are now kept in the Town Archives of Mechelen. The rest was added to the library of the Grand Seminary of Mechelen.

Thanks to the efforts of, among others, emeritus professor Luc Dequeker, the collection of early printed books of the Grand Seminary (including an important part of the Library of Cardinal d’Alsace), was deposited in 1969 at the library of the Faculty of Theology of the KU Leuven. Making accessible this very extensive collection is a long process that will continue in the coming years. The processing of the nearly three thousand titles from the Collection d’Alsace  in the Maurits Sabbe Library is a first important step.

Uitlenen didactisch materiaal

Materiaal met betrekking tot de leerkrachtenopleiding – zowel hand/werkboeken als audiovisueel materiaal – kan

uitgeleend worden.

Werkwijze:

1. Om didactisch materiaal uit te lenen, wendt u zich binnen de kantooruren (8u30-17u) tot de balie.  
2. Een medewerker komt samen met jou naar de didactische hoek, om het uitleenformulier in te vullen en de item te overhandigen.
3. Per uit te lenen item betaal je een waarborg van 2 euro (liefst gepast)
4. Na maximum twee weken breng je het materiaal terug naar de balie
5. Samen met de medewerker werk je in de didactische hoek het uitleenformulier verder af en krijg je de waarborg terugbetaald.

 Praktische afspraken:

-          De uitleentermijn bedraagt maximum twee weken
-          Draag zorg voor het uitgeleende materiaal, zo kunnen de
           mensen na jou ook genieten van onbeschadigde exemplaren.
-          Laat het uitgeleende materiaal niet onbeheerd achter, ook niet
           in de bibliotheek zelf. Jij bent er immers verantwoordelijk voor.

LIAS

Vrijdagnamiddag 22 oktober vond de officiële lancering plaats van het LIAS (Leuvens Integraal ArchiveringsSysteem), dat zorgt voor het digitaal beheer van archieven met een digitaal depot.

Naast het KADOC, de Universiteitsbibliotheek, het Universiteitsarchief was ook de faculteit Godgeleerdheid (Maurits Sabbebibliotheek) een drijvende motor achter dit initiatief.
Voor de faculteit werd een kleine ‘digitale bibliotheek’ gerealiseerd in samenwerking met de Université Paul Verlaine (Metz) en de GEMCA (Group Early Modern Cultural Analysis) van de UCL (Louvain-la -Neuve): namelijk de Bibliotheca Imaginis Figuratae. 

Deze virtuele Bibliotheca bevat momenteel reeds 24 volledig gedigitaliseerde boeken, voornamelijk uit de Maurits Sabbebibliotheek. Het eigene aan deze collectie boeken is dat ze bijna uitsluitend uit werk van jezuïeten bestaan, met o.a. een grote collectie van de hand van Maximilianus Sandaeus (Max Van der Sandt,1578-1656). Het betreft  hier niet zozeer ‘prentenboeken’, dan wel tractaten over de relatie van woord en beeld. De boeken bevatten analyses van symbolen, wat zo belangrijk is voor het onderzoek van de culturele context van de Moderne Tijd. Als dusdanig hopen we met de publicatie van deze basiswerken het onderzoek te stimuleren naar die gebieden waar spiritualiteitgeschiedenis, kunstgeschiedenis, en geschiedenis van de letterkunde elkaar raken.

Lias maakt het mogelijk om full-teksten online te consulteren

De boeken die deel uitmaken van deze virtuele bibliotheek werden pagina per pagina gescand in de Maurits Sabbebibliotheek. Als dusdanig zijn ze ook toegankelijk via de LIAS website.  

De collega’s van Metz en Louvain-la-Neuve zorgen nu voor de opmaak van de analytische metadata. Deze metadata zullen de namen omvatten van de auteurs die in het boek vermeld worden, van de boeken die er geciteerd worden, en van alle relevante onderwerpen die het bevat.

Friday, October 22, marked the official launch of LIAS. This acronym stands for “Leuven Integral Archival System”, a system designed for digital archive management and storage.

The Faculty of Theology (in particular, the Maurits Sabbe Library), together with KADOC, the University Library, and the University Archives, are the driving force behind this initiative.
A small digital library has already been realized, in cooperation with the Université Paul Verlaine (Metz) and GEMCA (Group Early Modern Cultural Analysis) of the UCL (Louvain-la -Neuve): the Bibliotheca Imaginis Figuratae.

An example of a full-text book on LIAS

This virtual Bibliotheca currently contains 24 fully digitized books, primarily from the Maurits Sabbe Library. This collection of books contains almost exclusively works from sixteenth and seventeenth-century Jesuits, e.g. a vast collection of Maximilianus Sandaeus (Max Van der Sandt, 1578-1656). In spite of its name, this collection does not deal with ‘books full of images’, but rather with scientific and spiritual-theological tractates, dealing with the relationship between word and image. The books selected mainly contain analyses of symbols, something vital for researching the cultural context of modern times. We hope that making available these seminal works will stimulate further research into those areas where the history of spirituality, art and literature meet.

The volumes in this virtual library were carefully scanned in the Maurits Sabbe Library, page by page. As such, they are available on the LIAS website.

Colleagues in Metz (France) and Louvain-la-Neuve tend to the analytical metadata, which someday will be added to all scanned volumes. These metadata will include the names of all the authors mentioned in the book, the ancient books cited, and relevant subjects addressed.

Upgrade online catalogus

Vanaf zondagmiddag 24 tot en met dinsdag 26 augustus 2008 krijgt de bibliotheeksoftware een upgrade. Anders dan de vorige onderhoudswerken waar de catalogus volledig onbeschikbaar was, kan u nu een kopie van de online catalogus raadplegen. Dit heeft als gevolg dat gedurende deze drie dagen:

• de documenten die na Pasen 2008 werden ingevoerd, niet beschikbaar zijn
• u geen materialen kunt verlengen of reserveren
• u uw lezersgegevens niet kunt bekijken

Wil ons verontschuldigen voor dit noodzakelijk ongemak.

Verwerking collectie prof. Arnulf Camps: project II

Na een eerste geslaagde fase in de verwerking van de rijke en actuele boekencollectie van wijlen prof. Arnulf Camps ofm (1925-2006), is nu ook fase II tot uitvoering gebracht. Hier lag de focus op de deelcollectie omtrent missie in Azië en Afrika. Het past ons hier uitermate veel dank te betuigen aan UBD die voor dit project de nodige man vrouwkracht leverde!
