On February 1, 2012, the Maurits Sabbe Library of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (KU Leuven) will host an ‘open house’ from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. This is in celebration of the completion of the library expansion works and, after a stunning restoration project, the return of the Anjou Bible to the renovated Rare Books Room.
The return of the Anjou Bible to the Maurits Sabbe Libray coincides with the completion of the one and a half year expansion and renovation of the library. The library was expanded with a new wing connecting it to the Maria Theresia College. The works were completed under the guidance of architect Marie Verlinden.
The Rare Books Room has doubled in size, while respecting the original architectural elements of the building. This state-of-the-art, air-conditioned, high-security area houses a rich collection of manuscripts, incunabula, and rare old books from various fields. It is the permanent repository for masterpieces, such as the Anjou Bible (fourteenth century), the colorful Blaeu Atlases (1635), and the Ymago Mundi by Petrus de Alliaco (c. 1483). With the expansion, there is now room for an additional 600 meters of rare books.
Everyone is welcome to the ‘open house’ on February 1, and there will be guided tours between 1:00pm and 4:00pm. By way of a photo exhibition and an audio-visual show, visitors will be able to experience the renovation, step-by-step. An exhibition of the works of the Rare Books Room will also give a taste of the richness of this unique cultural heritage.
